Training Manager - The Oyster Box

Awards - TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards - Voted No. 1 Top Hotel in South Africa (2017)

The Oyster Box (Red Carnation Hotels), embarked on the AHLEI / IHST journey 3 years ago. In that time a large number of our top performing staff have successfully completed the CHA, CHT, CHS, CHDT and more recently the GSG professional training and certification programmes.

We have seen very clear results through investing in our staff, such as increased staff morale, increased satisfied guests, and the achievement of many service awards by The Oyster Box. IHS have played a crucial role in supporting this journey. A large part of the success of these programmes is a result of their dedicated hospitality professionals who strive to better themselves and believe in the education and upliftment of staff within the hospitality industry. We believe IHS is the leading hospitality education institution in SA and we will continue to work with them in the future.”

“uShaka Marine World is very much dependant on ensuring guest excellent customer service, their visit to the park is memorable and increasing return visits to the Park. The Guest First training provided by IHS, has been an important part of helping us achieve this, as it highlighted the key aspects of the quality of the guest’s experience, giving practical and relevant tips and encouraging a real sense of pride in what we have offered in uShaka Marine World.

They (uShaka staff) all felt that the training acted as a beneficial reminder as to what we are essentially here to do as a job, and it has translated into improved service and customer satisfaction.”

General Manager - CMASA (Club Management Association of Southern Africa

“CLUB MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (CMASA) signed an agreement with IHS, for them to become our exclusive service provider for courses within the hospitality arena. IHS has successfully delivered Food and Beverage Operations, Human Resources Training and many more frontline programmes to many of our member clubs. IHS also assists in delivery of the global BMI courses (Business Management Institute) which are the pathway to the Certified Club Management certification i.e. CCM designation. We are also looking into development of the BMI content for registration with SAQA – this is going to be a long process, but one that we believe will be beneficial for our industry.”

Werner Geere

General Manager, Radisson Blu Sandton

How did the workshop enable you to refine your skills and knowledge? Johan Scheepers from the Maslow Hotel absolutely blew our minds with his pure passion for the Sales and Marketing subject. The content of the theory was rich and the quality of the conversation he lead surrounding one of the most important aspects of the hotel business left us all in awe and wanting more.

Which Guest Lecturer inspired you the most with their insight into Industry and why ? We are often asked when presenting month end results, “In hindsight, what would you and your TEAM have done differently?”. I take home with me tangible and usable insight and a wealth of information that would lead my business into more prosperous grounds. The recognition an individual will receive by completing the Certified Hotel Administrator program with IHS is invaluable and it would create momentum that will ensure future career and business successes.

How did the workshop enable you to refine your skills and knowledge? Experienced leaders from the industry facilitating workshops; combined with key knowledge sharing and networking platform amongst fellow colleagues, makes the CHA workshop arguably a perfect blend of experiential and developmental learning.

Which Guest Lecturer inspired you the most with their insight into Industry and why?The leadership and diversity workshop facilitated by Ian Jones, his exposure and experiences across multi-cultural environments was a very fulfilling lesson. As a leader, we need to continually self-introspect towards ensuring our teams stay motivated and embarrassing diversity remains a key facet of this engagement. In a country as diverse as South Africa, it is all the more relevant towards achieving a shared and mutually beneficial goal.

Chris Godenir

General Manager, The Peninsula All Suite Hotel

In 2012 in order to recertify I needed to either complete a portfolio of evidence of service to the industry or write the exam again, I chose to write again and surprisingly passed. Next time round there is no doubt I will attend that years GM’s workshop, not only will it give me the opportunity to go over the work content, but also network with like minded professionals.

I recommend this workshop to any General Manager, young or old, in 5 short days you can gather another 5 years of motivation and rediscover the enthusiasm and self-belief that you rank alongside the best.

Managing Executive: Hospitality and Retail Bidvest Prestige

I have recently had the privilege of working with Paul and his team at the International Hotel School, to complete my Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) designation. From beginning to end the assistance and guidance offered was world class and helped me to navigate my way through the course with determination and success. From my earliest days in the industry as a management trainee, I always looked up to the only CHAs in the country with awe. There were only 2 that I recall in 1989 and I think they both worked at The Carlton Hotel. The course facilitation sessions were well prepared and delivered by visiting industry executives and individuals with a passion for formal learning that goes beyond the classroom. The content was massively relevant and the course material still remains at the forefront of what the industry holds relevant and important. I must warn you however, that this is not for the fain hearted. Many long hours of preparation for the exam are required, as is a solid foundation of skills honed after many years in hospitality, or you will find yourself short of the very high and exacting standards set by the AHLEI.

I am proud to be associated and recognized by the International Hotel School Training and the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute as it represents the realization of a very long term personal objective that has finally come to fruition.
